As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we will be featuring Bridge articles from the archives.
CLICK HERE to read an informative article by Allison Schlickman, class of 2015. Her story, “Designed, Engineered and Built by Women,” tells of a database, housed on Landmark Illinois’ website, of places in the state that were designed, engineered, and built by women. Women’s achievements in architecture deserve to be widely celebrated. This database turns a spotlight on those achievements right here in our home state.

Thanks, Allison! Had no idea.
Great stuff, Allison. There is also Chicago born Mation Mahoney Griffin, first licensed female architect in IL and second female graduate of MIT,’s architecture program, after Sophia Hayden who designed the Women’s building at the World’s Columbian Exposition.
Married Walter Burley Grifin in 1911. Together they collaborated on a number of dwellings at Rock Crest-Rock Glen in Mason City Iowa, an outstanding collection of Prairie Style homes. Became famous for winning international architecture competition to design new Australian capital at Canberra and moved there in 1914. Her beautiful watercolor perspectives of the design were credited for their win.
