VEV Chair’s Message – October 2017

Greetings fellow volunteers,

Welcome to October! Are you ready?

Usually when I am asked that question I reply, “I’m as ready as I can be.” So much is going on at CAF and in the world of Chicago architecture, it is hard to stay on top of everything. But I’m as ready as I can be!!

I am so excited about Open House Chicago I can hardly stand it. Every year when OHC rolls around I start my lists. Lists of places I want to see, places I didn’t get to see the previous year, and new places I hadn’t even known existed! Needless to say, I usually burn out before I see everything on my list, a.k.a. stopping for lunch in a yet-to-be- explored neighborhood. Let’s hope we have decent weather.

The downtown Chicago model was cleaned the week of 9/11-9/15 and CMEW (Columbian Model and Exhibit Works) made updates/additions to the following buildings:

When you hover over each address above, you’ll be linked to a website or article describing the building. Just check dates of the articles; some buildings have articles dating back to 2016.

Did you notice a green dot sticker on the top of a building near the river on the model? This is the location of the new Chicago Architectural Center (CAC), where we’ll be moving to next year!

A couple of things to be sure to put on your calendars. First is a lecture that will discuss the “Between the States” exhibit in the Atrium. It is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, in the lecture hall. The time of the lecture will be announced shortly. Second is a lecture on November 6 in the lecture hall titled, “The State of Architecture with Helmut Jahn”. The lecture is scheduled for 6pm, and reservations must be made with CAF.
That’s all for this month. If you have any questions or just want to say hello, drop me a note! Meanwhile, see you in the shop, the atrium, the Design Studio, and 360 Chicago!

Sincerely,

Ellen Oberhart
Chair of the Volunteer Steering Committee
