Here are the answers to the DAN Trivia questions from March 5. How did you do?.
.
1 – What does DAN stand for?
Docent Appreciation Night, or DAN, is a dinner given TO docents BY the CAC Board of Trustees in appreciation for all of their services to CAC. It also has become the night when docents honor one another with awards for service above and beyond the traditional.
2 – When was the first official DAN held?
The first DAN was held in 1980. See the complete history of DAN in today’s other 50th Anniversary article.
3 – Before the Board of Trustees sponsored DAN, which it does today, which CAF Docent Council Committee organized DAN?
It was the job of the Standards Committee to organize and run DAN before the CAF Board and staff took over the job.
4 – In what year was DAN a black tie affair?
It was 2001 – and who here still has his tux or dress from that occasion, and does it still fit?
5 – How many of the following were themes for DAN evenings?
a – Look at Us Now
b – Paris on the Prairie
c – Docents for All Seasons
d – Sweet Home Chicago
All of these were previous DAN themes. These themes set the tone of the evening as well as guided decisions about flowers, decorations or programming. How many of us remember Judith Kaufman’s French Parisian garb for the Paris on the Prairie dinner?
6 – Which venues match these descriptions?
a – Served as a location for soldiers’ entertainment during World War II?
The ballroom at the Chicago Hilton on Michigan Avenue
b – Was one of the tallest buildings we have visited, and where a group of docent voices greeted people as they entered?
The Midday Club at the top of the Aon Center. The docent quintet was led by Robin Simon and Frank Youngwerth
7.. Which of these venues has CAF/CAC used for DAN more than once:
a – Chicago Athletic Association (Hotel)
b – Palmer House
c – Radisson Blu
d – The Intercontinental
All of them
8 – Who was chairman of DAN when the L train tracks led you to your table; the tables were renamed for L stops, and the Blues Brothers arrived to talk about “Chicawga”
The late Leanne Star was chairman for the DAN that featured as its theme, the Chicago L Lines.

6b–it’s the Mid-America Club, not the Midday Club?
Yes, I still have my dress and it fits. But, I think the answer to question 4 is a bit misleading. The BOT funds DAN, but they don’t organize it. Docents plan and organize it, with, of course, help from staff.
Thanks for the shout-out in question 6b! We had a doowop quartet (informally called the “Docent Voices” – get it? pre-GTS) for 2 years, comprised of me, docents Jill Dahlke and Frank Youngwerth and docent spouse Glenn Gabanski.
