Transitions and Milestones – March 2023

Tom Burt

Our community mourns the passing of Tom Burt, class of 2004, last October. A precise and orderly soul, Tom offered a number of tours to the visiting public in which he shared his knowledge and commitment to detail. A classmate noted: I will miss Tom’s sense of humor. He always quietly put things in perspective and found the humor in any situation. Tom’s tours included Chicago Icons, Chicago Modern, FLW Neighborhoods, Frank Lloyd Wright in Oak Park, River Cruise, and the University of Chicago Campus. We offer the Burt family condolences and memories. CLICK HERE to read Burt’s obituary.

Tom was a wonderful docent for the University of Chicago tour, of which I was co-Tour Director for a number of years, He was enthusiastic and knowledgeable – and also often volunteered for private tours (Tour Directors love THOSE docents, as many of you well know !!). He appreciated others’ efforts and reached out to acknowledge them. I know he was proud to be a river docent as well and I will defiinitely miss him.

Tom was my sponsor when I became a docent in 2008. His helpful coaching was very worthwhile and I appreciate that he devoted his time to assist me. Tom was a former employee of the Montgomery Ward Company. I live in the former Catalog Warehouse building and I gave Tom a tour of the building. He had some stories to tell about working there. I’ll miss him!
