Tour Policy Reminders for Docents

Hey, docents, with tours in full swing, take a minute to review these two important policies. Tours run more smoothly when we’re all on the same page.

Number of Guests per Tour Policy

  • For most core tours, the number of guests is capped at 15 per docent. There are exceptions; tours that use the L train are capped at a lower inventory. A docent must not attempt to negate this policy by offering to take more guests, if guests are being turned away by staff due to a sold-out tour. Such discussions between docents and staff confuse the guests. The policy exists to make the guest experience a comfortable one in a manageably sized group.
  • If a tour has 10 or more guests, it should be split about evenly among the docents.

Bye Policy

A “bye” is defined as a docent receiving tour and merit hours for a tour the docent does not actually give under the following circumstances:

  • If a tour has fewer guests than required for an additional docent, the docent signing in first at the box office has the option of either leading the tour or taking a bye.
  • Docents may not sign in for a tour more than one hour before the scheduled time of the tour.
  • First-year docents have priority to lead tours until they have led thirteen public tours.
  • After meeting their minimum requirement, first-year docents will be treated as are all other docents regarding the bye policy.
  • A docent taking a bye will wait ten minutes after the start of the tour for late arrivals.
