Public Programs are for YOU!

At the CAC, our public programs and events help you to think differently about the places we live, work and play. Participate in expert-led discussions about the latest design issues. Get behind-the-scenes access to the city’s architectural treasures. Enjoy hands-on studio workshops, book clubs, and more through our series of lifelong learning adult educations classes.

As many of you know, the CAC’s new home at 111 E. Wacker, was one of Mies van der Rohe’s final designs.  If you want to learn more about Mies, his life, and what really happened at the Farnsworth House, join us for a two-part book club on September 17 and 24 at 6:00 pm.  We will be discussing Mies van der Rohe:  A Critical Biography by Franz Schulze.  This is a major rewriting and expansion of Schulze’s 1985 biography of Mies.  The authors’ major new discoveries include the massive transcript of the early-1950s Farnsworth House court case, which discloses for the first time the facts about Mies’s epic battle with his client Edith Farnsworth.

Our facilitator for both evenings will be local architect, Paul Steinbrecher, whose area of professional expertise includes historic preservation, libraries and cultural and religious institutions.  He is a popular lecturer on Mies and Modernism during docent training and our NEH summer workshop for teachers.
