Project Fresh: Highlights from Docent Day

Over the past six months, the Project Fresh team conducted extensive research and observation of CAF tour-takers and Chicago-based competitors. Their goal: Learn what tour-takers enjoy the most in their tours, and then pump up the appeal of our tours by delivering it better than anyone else. The focus was on how tour leaders give their tours, not on buildings and routes.

The research pointed to a handful of guiding principles that are strikingly consistent with “Best Practices” supported by the Education Committee, and findings from Jason Nu’s “Wonder in the Windy City” Ph.D. dissertation. So we feel good that we’re on the right track!

These principles — which you’ll read in the attached — will be incorporated into 2018 Core Tour training. We hope that every docent adapts these “guest-centric techniques” to their own style and tours to deliver more engaging, satisfying experiences for their tour-takers.
