President’s Message, May 2021 – Pop Quiz!

Dear docent family,

It is finals week!  My poor students, who have sat on Zoom class calls all semester, are taking online exams.   They are staring at their screens and being recorded to make sure no academic dishonesty violations are occurring.  Watching a sleepy undergrad fumble and sweat through a final is not part of my job description.  But in honor of finals week, I have a quiz for you.  (Hint:  It is open book….)

  1. How many years of service must a docent have to request “sustaining docent” status?
  2. When taking a “Bye”, how long do you have to stay after the tour start time for late arrivals?
  3. True/False: Docents are prohibited from accepting tips.
  4. Who is allowed to attend Docent Council meetings?
  5. Which committee acts as a liaison to CAC staff for all matters concerning on-going training and education of all docents?
    .

Where can you find the answers to these questions?  The Docent Handbook!  (or, at the bottom of this letter if you need immediate gratification for knowing all these answers).  You can find the Docent Handbook and the Docent Articles of Operation on The Bridge.  (Note:  There are lots of other great resources under the “Files and Documents” section on The Bridge!)

The Docent Handbook is a supplement to the Articles of Operation.  The Docent Articles of Operation are approved by the CAC Board of Trustees.  Many of you may consult these documents regularly.  Some of you might not have seen them since docent training….um….like me until I was charged with helping to update the handbook a couple of years ago.  That experience taught me that many thoughtful docents before us created a “rules of the road” book for us.  The world is constantly changing, and updates to the handbook do regularly happen.  But, if you have any questions about how docenting works, please consult the handbook.  It is there for you!

Yes, it is spring (finally).  Yes, the leaves are on the trees and the flowers are blooming.  Yes, it is 35 degrees near the lake (a little chillier, if you are on the River Cruise nearer to the water!).  And, it is finals week.  A vast summer of possibility stretches out before us.  Here’s hoping that come Labor Day, we are all commenting about the great weather, fun tours, and NORMALCY we enjoyed in summer of 2022.

Happy May!

Professor Kent
