My fellow docents,
The saying goes something like this: “The year is short, but the days and the nights are long.” I have never felt this more than in 2020. I cannot believe that we are midway through August. Because of the pandemic, I’m still waiting for Memorial Day, July 4th, etc. But each day feels so long. Perhaps it’s spending all day with my wife (listening to her work), preparing three meals at home every day, or walking my dog seven times a day (He used to get five walks, one by a walker, but he’s conned me into seven now!)
The only days that went “fast” were the most “normal” days I’ve had lately—the two days that I gave river cruises. I rode my bike from my home in Lakeview–down Lincoln Avenue, through Lincoln Park, and down State Street. It was exhilarating to be in the city! I learned I can ride a bike wearing a mask with no problem. Pro tip: If you bike in a mask, take a second, dry mask to change into!
The cruise felt a bit different. There were about 70 people (max is about 90). The chairs were spaced out appropriately. I, and the tour takers, wore masks. And the tour takers kept them on for the most part, removing them just to eat or drink. Everyone had them on when moving around the boat, and the boat personnel were very attentive. The biggest difference is the tourists are more local/regional. Evening tours are very popular and are most successfully sold. I urge river docents to consider giving an occasional evening tour to help with this important revenue generator for CAC.
I have not given a walking tour yet, but I have spoken to a few docents who have, and they had positive reviews. Tour takers have been responsible and stayed distanced, and the unusually empty sidewalks have made moving around the loop quite easy. Hopefully, the recent unrest will not have a long term effect on folks continuing to take our tours.
Obviously, everyone must “return” when comfortable. I was not one of the first to be “back out there”. But, if you’re thinking about it, I’d encourage you to sign up for just ONE tour….whether a river cruise, one of the three tours that leave from the CAC, or a neighborhood tour. Give it a try. After doing one tour, you can decide for yourself if you feel comfortable about signing up for more.
Perhaps when I look back, I won’t be sorry to feel like 2020 was “short”. I’m not sure I really want more of this crazy year. But enough of such philosophical thoughts….Casper, my dog, is staring at me, demanding walk #6 today. Sigh.
Stay safe!
Kent
