Dear Docents,
“I need somebody
(Help) not just anybody
(Help) you know I need someone, HELP”
Perhaps, you remember these lyrics from a song in your past. Perhaps, some of you are too young to know this song (I am guessing that is not very many of you!). We are looking for a little help these days around the CAC and the docent program.
As you know, the docent body is “self-governing”. This is extremely unusual for an organization with a significant volunteer docent population. I have heard many docents justly bragging about this important aspect of our community.
Interestingly enough, many of those same folks have not stepped up to actually HELP with governance. We often draw from our new classes for Docent Council and committee membership. Folks take “their turn” working in governance. Some love it and stick around for a long while. Some like it less, so they stop and are replaced by docents from incoming docent classes.
The “problem,” if we can call it that, is that we have missed several classes these last few years. Moving to the new CAC location, COVID, and class redesign caused us to miss 3 docent classes recently. Consequently, we are having difficulty finding members for committees, where all the nitty gritty work is done for docent council, and even for Docent Council members.
Maybe you have some interest, but not really sure how you can help. Well, right now we are looking for folks to run for Docent Council. Lisa Pickell (lp****@ya***.com) is running the Election Committee this year. Please reach out to her if you have any interest in running for council. She would be happy to discuss what council membership entails, and then you can decide if you are ready for candidacy.
Or maybe you are interested in a committee. Again, this is where the sleeves get rolled up, and the work gets done. Here are the committee co-chairs. Consult the docent handbook for brief descriptions of each committee, then reach out to them for more information. Their email addresses are in Volunteer Matters.

Again, drawing from my friends from Liverpool…..
Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me………….. (us)

I have wanted to “take a turn”. The day/hours are the problem for me. I could help during the day (not Saturday), but I prefer not to attend evening docent meetings. That’s the reason I have not volunteered to participate in Docent Council and the reason I have not volunteered to train a river docent. I’m an earlybird. If you can use help EARLY in the morning, Sundays, most holidays, I’m your “man”.
