Photo Corner – Bridging the Gap

By Susan Osborn, Class of 2003

Bridging the Gap.  When giving a tour, I am always delighted by the sight of bridge lifts.  They are a bonus to any river tour, and my tourists love to hear about them.  Like a wristwatch, bridges are functional, moveable pieces of art.  Standing under Columbus Ave Bridge while it opens is one of my favorite things to do during Bridge-Lift Season.  I am captivated by its functional beauty, and I revel in the sound of its creaks, groans, and final thump upon closure.

This week has brought us yet another unexpected series of events – the senseless death of George Floyd, the resulting peaceful protests, and the unproductive violence bringing ravage to our city and so many others. This is heartbreaking on so many levels. Like the pandemic, these events have changed the course of our present and future.  And they have left physical and emotional wounds.

Opening almost all bridges was a necessary precaution.  We are not accustomed to seeing them all raised at one time.  The accompanying sound of bridge bells ringing day and night would normally sound like a celebration. It has been extraordinary to behold.

People have mentioned the symbolic nature of this sight, a great divide of sorts.   But we know this sight is temporary; soon, the bridges will all be lowered again, bridging the gap from one side to another.  May that closure result in another symbolic hope – for peace in our country, and our world.
