Photo Corner, April 24 – In Focus

By Susan Osborn, Class of 2003

In Focus. Having lived in Streeterville for the past 14 years, I have witnessed the construction of at least 15 neighboring buildings. Tourists flood the Riverwalk nearby. Those of us giving River Tours have looked forward to yet another beautiful CLF “Lady” to accommodate the flood of tourists into our city. The pandemic has been like a street sweeper in the night – and we have awoken to a new world. At least for a while.

When big things change, so do the things we focus upon. When what we took for granted is no longer dependable, we look at what remains. Right now, the crowds are gone, but the buildings stand. And often, my camera’s focus is simplified. One building, object, one person, one bird – things I may not have even noticed previously in the crowds. The ability to observe what is most important is what I hope stays with us, even when this pandemic has passed.

Saddest of your photos is the sidewalk in front of Pinstripes, home of Chicago’s best BBQ ribs. I miss them dearly.

You have captured both the emptiness and beauty of our great city in this difficult time. I keep looking back at your pictures.
