The CEO, the Beauty Queen, and the Tower: A Love Story
His name was (1) John Swearingen, the president of (2) Standard Oil, one of the most powerful CEOs in the land. Her name was (3) Bonnie Bolden. She was runner-up in the Miss Alabama Beauty Contest four times.
She journeyed to Hollywood seeking fame and fortune. She was cast in the part of the other woman in the movie (4) Bundle of Joy, starring (5) Debbie Reynolds and (6) Eddie Fisher.
They became Chicago’s Royal Family. They traveled everywhere and they knew everyone. President Ford, Imelda Marcos, Richard Nixon.
He hired a famous architect with three names, (9) Edward Durrell Stone, to design a new headquarters for his company. The architect wanted the tower’s cladding to be of durable material, like (10) granite. She insisted that the building to be dressed in pure white (11) marble, imported from (12) Carrera, Italy. She won, but they lost!
As predicted, the white stone did not withstand Chicago’s brutal winters and had to be replaced with (13) granite from Mt. Airy, North Carolina. The estimated cost was (14) $80,000,000.
The moral of the story is: “Never take (15) Marble for Granite.”
And they lived happily ever after.
