By Leslie Clark Lewis, Class of 2009
On March 3, 1971, 50 years ago almost to the day, a small display ad appeared in the Chicago Tribune. Would you be interested in learning to be a guide at the Glessner House? The docent training program was set to launch at the Chicago School of Architecture Foundation. And now, half a century later, we are celebrating our CAC golden docent anniversary.
Throughout this year on The Bridge, we’ll be remembering events and milestones from the past, prompting memories and retelling stories. If you haven’t seen it yet, you might start by reading Jane Lucas’ “In Their Own Words” post that appeared on The Bridge in January. Jane was a member of the very first CAF docent class and has fantastic recall of those events. CLICK HERE to read her story.
As you might expect, The Glessner House is also celebrating docents’ 50 years. CLICK HERE to read this week’s post about the beginnings. You’ll have to scroll down almost to the bottom.
Each week, look for the 50 Years Docents logo on the Features marquee pictures. When you see it, you’ll know there’s a story celebrating our history.
