From the Center-January Update

Happy New Year 2019. This is the first in what the Communications Committee hopes will be a monthly series of what is happening at the Chicago Architecture Center, a summary to help you stay abreast of what is going on at CAC that affects us all.

  • A new tour has been addedInside the Center. This is a free, 45 minute tour that provides an in-depth look at all the galleries and the design of the CAC. The tour is currently lead by our Education guides and is offered Tuesday through Saturday. Groups have been enthusiastic about the tour and numbers are running well. This tour does not require a ticket but spots first-come first-serve.
  • Lecture/Tour Reminders-Guests who sign up for tours will now receive an email reminder about their ticketed event three days prior. This is intended to remind people that their tour is upcoming and should help reduce the number of no-shows, particularly for neighborhood tours that tend to be booked far ahead. This has been a long awaited process since partnering with our ticketing software, Tessitura. Kudos to the CAC staff that helped design and develop this.
  • New Model-If you haven’t walked the CAC galleries lately, be sure not to miss the newest attraction in the Drake Skyscraper Gallery: a scale model of the 111 W. 57th St., New York City, the world’s slenderest skyscraper. The building, which is built into the 1925 Steinway Building, designed by SHoP Architects is 1,428-ft. or 435 meters high, with a 23:1 ration of height to width. It is a condo building, with 46 units, sitting alongside many supertall slender skyscrapers on the south end of New York’s Central Park. The building uses terra cotta pilasters and bronze ornamentation and has what have been dubbed “feathered” setbacks. Take a look. It’s quite fascinating.
