Interested in learning a neighborhood tour this year? River North: Transformation of a Neighborhood and Graceland: Symbols in Stone are both looking for a few docents. Below is a description of the tour, training, and other needed information.
Graceland: Symbols in Stone
Join us for a leisure 2 hour walk in the older section of Graceland Cemetery. Symbols in Stone Tour is given once a month on the last Saturday at 10:00 am from May to October and focuses on symbols and shapes of headstones and monuments with stories from Chicagoans that played a big role in Chicago’s History: Newberry, Ogden, Hubbard, Carter Harrison, etc.
A couple of docents are needed to give this tour with training that involves observation of the tour, review of the manual, and a certification with tour director(s).

River North: Transformation of a Neighborhood
Come and discover one of Chicago’s most vibrant neighborhoods – right in the heart of the city. Just minutes from the Magnificent Mile, River North has enjoyed a colorful history, going from boom to bust and back again. In recent years, River North has regained its neighborhood character. It is now home to thousands of new residents attracted by its unique mix of old and new. Come and explore an area that boasts gems from its industrial golden age alongside cutting-edge designs of the twenty first century. Where else can you find the work of Henry Ives Cobb and Daniel Burnham in the shadows of buildings by Dirk Lohan or Pritzker Prize winner Kenzo Tange?
The tour is given once a month from May to September 10:30 am -12:30 pm on a Saturday or a Sunday.
The dates for 2018: Sunday 5/6, Saturday 6/9, Sunday 7/15, Saturday 8/25, Sunday 9/30
Scheduling docents and tour popularity:
In 2017 two docents were scheduled per tour date, and participation averaged 18.6.
Docents needed: One or two
Learning the tour: The manual is available online. The TD is willing to walk the route with any docent interested in learning the tour, but each docent is responsible for learning the tour individually and practicing sufficiently with friends and family before scheduling a certifying tour.
Timing: Learn the tour and certify by April 15, 2018.
