Throughout docent studies we “bump” into the 1893 Columbian Exposition, one of the stars on the city flag. The Fair was a statement to the world that Chicago had risen from its ashes into a cosmopolitan city. It brought women’s art and leadership to the fore as well as the story of one of America’s first serial killers.
The Devil in the White City tour incorporates both the story of the fair and of H. H. Holmes, the so-called “devil” of Eric Larson’s book of the same name. It begins with an hour-long PowerPoint presentation in the Lecture Hall, then a bus tour of Prairie Avenue, home of many Fair supporters, and finally to the Fair’s Hyde Park location. It is a long tour with lots to learn.
We are looking for one or two docents interested in training for this tour, one of CAC’s most popular for almost two decades. Join us as we tell the tales of Daniel Burnham, Fredrick Law Olmstead, Bertha Palmer, and Holmes to eager tourees, many of whom have recently read the book.
