CAC Update 7.21.2023

October calendars open soon (August 5th). Here is a glimpse at the updated October 16-November 5th Tour Schedule:

What’s Happening at the CAC?

IN THE DESIGN STUDIO – Some of you may have noticed, but we have some visitors at the center! The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Architecture has been utilizing our design studio as a classroom for a group of 14 students for their summertime Chicago Studio course. This group is developing plans for a hypothetical co-housing project in the Gold Coast. The group is usually here during our operating hours and will be using the design studio space until July 31st. Feel free to stop by and check out what they are up to!

They will also be hosting their mid-studio and final critiques in our Lecture Hall on July 17th and July 28th. This is our first guest studio and we are eager to see how it adds to the life and energy of the CAC!

CAC SUMMER CAMPS – We are also welcoming a variety of young students in our Lecture hall space this summer, as well!! Be sure to say hello if you see groups of our students and educators.

Here are some camps we have going on this summer:

  • Designers Assemble (Jun 26th-June 30th, Ages 11-14)
    • Join the CAC for a weeklong exploration on how the design process can be utilized when thinking of ways to heal habitats. Campers will discover how design and architecture can be used to address the environmental needs of one of four habitats. They will share their future visions for these habitats through the creation of a comic book.
  • Eco-tecture (July 10th-July 14, Ages 8-10)
    • Join the CAC for a weeklong exploration into the architecture of animal habitats in zoos and aquariums. Campers will explore how architects take on the challenges of replicating and integrating healthy ecosystems for animals. Campers will take on the challenge of designing one of four possible habitats to explore the importance of design and architecture in both nature and in urban settings. Centering the design process campers will create dioramas of their proposed designs.
  •  Girls Build! Summer Camp: The Urban Environment (July 24-July 28, Ages 12-15) – Offsite
    •  Join us in exploring how the design process can be utilized to improve urban environments. Girls will discover how female designers, architects, and activists have addressed the environmental needs of communities in their practices to improve health and living conditions in cities. The girls will share their future visions for the urban environments by creating a comic book that centers on female superheroes.
  • Girls Build Summer Camp: Library Architecture & Community Design (August 7-August 11, Ages 12-15) – Offsite
    • Join us in exploring the world of Library Architecture & Community-focused Design. The Girls Build! Program will engage young girls in a design challenge that will center their ideas on local architecture projects. The girls will share the future of libraries by creating digital floor plans and the creation of 3-D architecture models.

Don’t understand a schedule for Oct. 16 – Nov. 5. When we sign up for October, do we also sign up for tours through Nov. 5?

Hi Delta, No. You only sign up for October. The CAC schedule goes through various seasons, so you will see the summer schedule is the same until October 16th. Following the 16th, we will go back to regular hours and our tour schedule will change.
