President’s Message, August, 2023

Swifties and Nascar and Lolla – oh my!

A lot is going on in the streets of Chicago! I hope everyone has been enjoying tours on the streets and the river!

I just finished an Historic Treasurers tour; it was a small group on a Monday afternoon – an architecture nerd from Washington state asking all sorts of great questions after every stop (lots of iceberg knowledge at work).  A family of 5 from Canada, including 3 teenage boys, who were much more engaged than I thought they would be (I may have been featured in my first TickTock video). Two folks from Chicago rounded out the group – they were very excited to hear the story of The Reliance Building and its impression on Mies.  As ever, a great reminder of why we do this!

With summer comes increased crowds on the street, heat, sun, and lots of visitors to our tours and the Center.  A great time to re-emphasize our Core Values—say them with me:

  • Respect
  • Collaboration
  • Integrity
  • Continued Learning

.As Docents we live by these core values every day – take a moment to complete a Core Value Shout-Out HERE, for something you saw or experienced one of your fellow docent’s doing recently which embodied our Core Values!

Last month I had the privilege of joining a lunch and cruise celebrating the 30th anniversary of the CAC river cruise – kudos to Constance Rajala (class of 2008) for sharing a bit of what of all of our docents do on the river every day. All while engaging a particularly challenging crowd (the bar was open) and incorporating her co-host, Joe Burns, from the CAC Board of Trustees!

In our combined July + August Docent Council meeting we had a fantastic guest in Jen Masengarb from the AIA.  As you already saw on The Bridge (HERE) and email from Lexie, Docents & Volunteers will once again act as the initial judging panel for their People’s Choice Award – submit your votes if you have not already done so!

In addition, each of our three taskforces provided updates on their key objectives: Staff & Docent collaboration, the Docent Experience, and Digital Growth – lots of exciting ideas in flight.  You can see their updates as well as mission statements and objectives HERE.

We closed out the meeting with an exciting preview of Open House Chicago and Education from Angela Esposito – It’s going to be another fantastic year for OHC.  Believe it or not, October is just around the corner!
