By Ellen Shubart, Class of 2006
Trivia question: Name the docents who watch the Great Chicago Quiz Show on WTTW.
.
The answer: probably most docents, since the WTTW program host is docent Geoffrey Baer. The questions often involve buildings and facts from our tours, and it’s fun to try to outwit the on-TV contestants.
Recently a docent was an actual contestant, zooming in from her home to participate in the first round of questions on the Great Chicago Quiz Show.
Kathleen Carpenter, Class of 2006, was introduced by Geoffrey as a docent, a fellow River Cruise docent, and a friend. The two docents have worked together often as Kathleen, along with other docents, has done research and fact-checking for some of Goeffrey’s WTTW specials on Chicago architecture.
Kathleen was in a group of three: a docent, a comedian, and generalist. They answered questions from different categories, and all were successful.
Kathleen’s category turned out to be the lightning round, meaning the questions were thrown at her as quickly as she could answer. And answer she did – she got them all, a series of addresses in Chicago. But as she commented afterward, it wasn’t too difficult to hear a Lake Shore Drive address with the word Sue after it to know that was the Field Museum. Other addresses were as readily obvious to her.
The program was taped last January, and Kathleen recently said she almost forgot about it. But she shines! If you missed it, view Season 2, Episode 5 of the Great Chicago Quiz Show on the WTTW website. Kathleen represented CAC and its docents magnificently. Just watch and see!
