Photography Features, May 2022 – Glass-itecture

By Kelly Manteck, Class of 2020

Glass-itecture.

.
One thing I love about architecture that is predominantly glass is how much it reflects its surroundings. In a city as beautiful as Chicago, you could capture so much by looking more deeply into the reflections. Not only does it show you your surroundings, but the view also changes with the weather. No matter how many times I’ve looked at some of these buildings, the view is still different each time and continuously amazes me. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I’ve enjoyed taking them.

Thanks, Kelly. They are superb photos and make you want to go out and see these buildings again.

Great photos, Kelly, and many of those buildings are indeed beautiful.

Unfortunately, many of them – especially the older ones – weren’t designed with due consideration to avoiding bird impacts. That doesn’t need to be, since it is well-known how to prevent glass buildings from being bird-killers, chiefly through the use of fritted glass. See

It would be to praise buildings on our tours that apply bird-saving methods, and to urge that buildings lacking such techniques apply them retroactively. For example, I give the CAC tour of the University of Chicago campus, and was gratified to see that they have recently begun to apply bird-safety film to windows of buildings that hadn’t been built with bird-safety windows: https://facilities.uchicago.edu/bulletins/bird_safety/
