Transitions and Milestones, June 2020 – Remembering Huette Kaplan

By Diane Wagner, Class of 2005

To meet Huette Kaplan was to be embraced—not physically, but by a long, warm regard and a wry smile.  Predictably and reliably, Huette was a steady presence at CAC during the late fall and winter months. As the director of the Marshall Field & Co. building tour, this was her high season.

We lost that charming presence when Huette passed away on June 18, 2020.

A lifelong learner and teacher, Huette held a long list of significant professional education and training positions across a diverse universe of businesses and organizations. In retirement, her commitment to enriching the lives of others included the Board of Directors Temple Bethel; the Calumet Area Literacy Council; the task force of the Chicago Coalition for Education and Training for Employment, among others.

Donations in Huette’s memory can be made to Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana or the Chicago Architecture Center. May her memory forever be a blessing.

Thank you Diane. I knew her from the many docent trips we both took. She was such an enthusiastic docent and traveler as well as interested in people she met. She will be missed at CAC.

Huette was my certifier for a former version of the Tiffany on Wednesdays tour. She was very gracious and encouraging, patient yet instructive. There ever after, whenever we met, she greeted me with charm and her “wry smile.” I will miss her.

Huette was a really lovely and friendly person. I’m happy that I knew her.
