Question of the Week: CAC Pets

This week, we wanted to know: Do you have any pets at home that are keeping you company during this time of social distancing and isolation? Here are the pets of CAC! Maybe they should all be made honorary volunteers?

Bob Pratt, Class of 2019 and Exhibit Host: Zelda

Zelda, a 9-year old former shelter cat, does a biiiiiig stretch.

Jim Javorcic, Class of 1999: Molly and Maggie

Molly (black) and Maggie (grey) enjoy some time on the balcony.

Jaime Villalobos, Class of 2016: Donatello

Donatello, a 2-year old Belgian Sheepdog, relaxes at home.

Burt Michaels, Class of 2019 and Education Guide: Huey

Huey, an almost 2-year-old Aussiedoodle (Australian labradoodle) stretches out. Huey’s walks are a highlight of shelter-in-place!

Corinne Rohr, Class of 2010: Millie Buttercup

Millie Buttercup wags her tail so hard it may just fall off! Millie and Corinne recently celebrated 12 years of companionship. Millie was a former puppy mill mom who Corinne rescued at age 2.

Lori Nelson, Class of 2020 Docent Trainee: Winston

Winston is a 9-year-old Labradoodle who loves Chicago architecture (or, at least is always willing to go on a walk!)

Polly Kawalek, Class of 2019: Bailey, Ella, and Zorro aka the Kawalek Kats

Bailey is caught taking a snooze!
Ella is an expert at sheltering in place. She thinks getting in bags is best!
Zorro is a great audience and loved helping with docent training practice.

Leanne Star, Class of 2011: Diva and Dillon

Diva, part of a sibling pair of Tibetan Terriers, is hard at work writing a newsletter to Leanne’s six grandchildren. Diva and Dillon were rescued from CARE in Evanston, and are 11 and 10 years old. Diva and Dillon have been part of the family for 6 years and are great company!

Mike McMains, Class of 2005: Cracker and Peeno

Cornish Rex duo Cracker (white) and Peeno (black) help Mike to relax and recharge!

Liz Peterson-Hall, Class of 2019: Fanny-May

Fanny-May is an extremely smart dog who joined the Peterson-Hall family 5 years ago through the Illinois Doberman Rescue. Born in a kill shelter, Fanny now lives a happy life and enjoys watching football with her humans and letting them give her belly rubs.

Kent Foutty, Class of 2009: Casper

Kent hangs out with his dog Casper!

Kevin Griebenow, Class of 1993 and Education Guide

Timber, an 8-year old Vizla, takes a rest. He lost an eye due to blastomycosis, a fungal infection, but Timber still loves to play catch with a Frisbee. Typical of his breed, Timber is a “velcro dog” who will lean against Kevin for pets.

Joann Sondy, Class of 2012 and Education Guide: Peaches

Peaches joined Joann four years ago as a rescue. Peaches’ advice for managing stress? “Try to maintain a positive attitude, eat healthy, take regular walks, and get adequate rest. Cozying up with a favorite stuffed animal is helpful, too!”

Lisa Pickell, Class of 2015: Franklin

Franklin (or Frank for short) was adopted from PAWS when he was a puppy! He is now keeping Lisa company in the suburbs for the duration of quarantine and enjoys daily walks in Old School Forest Preserve. When Lisa is working, Franklin likes to sit right at her feet!

David Ferguson, Class of 2020 Docent Trainee: Tuppence

Tuppence, a 4-year-old Bengal and Manx cross, is quite the affectionate cat!

Nancy Schwab, Class of 2011 and Exhibit Host: Ivy

For Ivy, exercise is key to staying sane in quarantine. Here she is finishing up her morning rowing!

Joni Hirsch Blackman, Class of 2013: Max

Max the Sheltie, now almost 10 years old, was raised from puppyhood when all the kids had left the house. Now, this smart and funny dog is great company for Joni and her husband, and Max is a great friend to their granddaughters!

Mary Harris, Exhibit Host and Guest Services Volunteer: Petey

Petey is a wonderful walking companion and knows that it’s important to stop and smell the flowers.

Ross Wirth, Class of 2019: Vector

No pets allowed in the building? No problem! Vector the robot is a trusty and intelligent companion.

Michele Kuhn, CAC Coordinator of Volunteer Engagement: Tony Pepperoni

Tony, who turns 2 years old later this month, enjoys a snooze on my laptop charger after a long day of Zoom meetings. Tony, a Florida native who moved with me to Chicago last fall, is enjoying a Florida vacation as we wait out the quarantine.

You are all so lucky to have these companions! I have to use public dogs–fortunately every other person in the neighborhood is willing to share during daily walks.

  2. Nancy

Aw, Tony Pepperoni knows that charger is a special connection to you! And it’s probably warm!

  3. Cynthia

Well, Vector is kinda cute, and the rest are all adorable. My vote goes to Franklin, though, because he looks like my last dog (that I still miss)! Maybe I’ll run into him at Old School one day.

What a handsome pup and a great name, too!
