The Great CAC Trivia Contest – May 2019 – Love and Architecture

By Hy Speck, Class of 1995

Love and architecture. Many a great architect’s work and life have been influenced by a great, or at least an interesting woman. Can you identify the architect, the lady, and the property?

1. “We met, when he came to see my father, a very prominent Chicago business man, about designing a new home on Prairie Avenue. I liked the architect more than the house. We later married and moved to Evanston, where we raised our children. Two of our sons became architects like their father.”

2. “There was a falling out with the architect over cost overruns. He sued me and I counter sued him. Many people assumed there was a romance of some sort. They said I expected the architect to go along with the house.”

3. “He was engaged to design a house for my husband and me. We fell madly in love and we left our spouses and children and ran off to the continent. But alas, as in most “les liasons dangerous”, this too, ended in tragedy.”
