Volunteer Chair’s Message – December 2018

“The year end brings no greater pleasure than the opportunity to express season’s greetings and good wishes.”                       -Charles Dickens

As my last posting of 2018 bridges the gap between Thanksgiving and the year-end holidays, I will take the opportunity not only to spread some Dickensian good cheer, but also to offer a bounty of well-deserved thanks.

To the over 20,000 adult guests and student field trippers who visited us at the CAC this year, thank you for sharing your time with us and for engaging the Volunteers in many memorable conversations.

To the 73 new Volunteers who joined the Exhibit Host and Guest Services team this year, thank you for improving both the quantity and quality of folks wearing CAC red.

To all CAC Volunteers, thank you for over 2500 hours of service in 2018.  And speaking of hours, please log on to Volunteer Matters before December 31 to make sure you’ve received credit for all your service time (including training sessions) during the calendar year.

To the Education Guides, thank you for another year of continued camaraderie.  And while I love all my fellow guides equally, a special thank you goes to Jeff (The Zen Master) Zurlinden for always showing us the way in terms of treating our guests and colleagues with dignity and respect.

To the Volunteer Steering Committee, thank you for your dedication to providing a constructive flow of feedback and ideas.  And to Lisa Ciota, thank you for your sage communications counsel.

To Constance Rajala and Tom Carmichael on the Docent Council, thank you for your spirit of inclusivity in working to integrate the Docents and Volunteers as a unified team.

To Angela Esposito and Rebecca Millham, thank you for your tireless efforts in creating the new CAC-based curriculum for the Education Guides and for always having our backs.

To Caroline Duda and Erin Carlisle, thank you for your eternal good cheer as you herd the cats and keep the Volunteer machine running.

And as a bittersweet last but not least, thank you to Gabe Lyon for having led a fantastic team and training programs.  Good luck in your new endeavor, and we hope our paths cross again in the CAC in your new consulting role.

Happy holidays to everyone, Bob

Thanks Bob!!! The Volunteer and Education Guide teams are great. This year I’ve come to appreciate how much we connect with students and other visitors to the Center. We all help make their experiences meaningful and memorable.
