Join us for a day of education, reflection and inspiration at All Docent Day, November 10, 2018!
Our annual meeting will be held this year at Mundelein Auditorium,a beautiful Art Deco style theatre with stained glass windows and sky-high ceilings, located in the Mundelein Center for Fine and Performing Arts, at Loyola University’s Lake Shore Campus. The recently restored 80 year-old building, formerly Mundelein College, is on the National Register of Historical places. Mundelein College was founded as an all-women’s college in 1930 and 60 years later the college joined Loyola University Chicago. Mundelein was the first self-contained skyscraper college for women in the world!
We’ll start the day at 8:30 for a continental breakfast and socializing with fellow docents. Our morning program, beginning at 9:00, will bring us two speakers who will focus on how the changing roles of women influenced architecture, an appropriate topic for this year’s venue. Jennifer Carlquist, Executive Director of Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison, N.Y., will speak about the role of women in shaping Chicago department stores. Ms. Carlquist has 20 years of experience as a museum professional. She taught as an adjunct professor at SUNY New Paltz from 2012 to 2017 and received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in art history from the University of Minnesota, along with a master’s degree in the history of design and curatorial studies from the Parsons School of Design.
Our second speaker needs no introduction; Jen Masengarb, former CAC docent guru, will join us for a remote presentation. Jen will address “Chicago’s Bachelor Girls: Early Skyscraper Design” and also catch us up on her work at the Denmark Architecture Center. Both speakers will present a unique view on the development of structures that form an important part of many of CAC’s tours.
Our lunch this year will feature a deli and salad spread, with appropriate sweets to keep the energy flowing for an afternoon session dedicated to reflection and update, with Lynn Osmond, President and CEO, CAC, presenting the status and progress we’ve made in the past year in our transition to the new Center. Following Lynn, Docent Council President Constance Rajala, Ellen Shubart, Docent at Large and Renee Purner, Docent Council Representative and Chairman of the Nominating Committee, will wrap us up with 2019 Docent Council Elections and general docent news.
It’s been a busy year and a day of community is just what we need to get us ready for 2019!
