Libraries are home to a variety of historical artifacts and the Barry Sears Volunteer Library is no exception. Recently, we acquired a vintage copy of the poster announcing the dedication of the Outer Drive Bridge (now Lake Shore Drive Bridge) by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on October 5, 1937. The poster was a gift from the Wilmette Historical Museum Curator, David Pratt, son of docent Bob Pratt, 2019. The library committee is grateful to Bob for engineering this acquisition and to his son, David, for thinking of our volunteer community. This poster not only memorializes a moment in Chicago history, it also captures an 87 year-old snapshot of the lakefront area near the mouth of the Chicago River. Next time you are in the library, stay a while, and check out how our world has changed. The poster is mounted on the wall just inside the library door next to the bank of lockers.
