We live in Michigan and visit Chicago when we can. We have done this tour 5 or 6 times throughout the years to keep up with the perpetual growth of this magnificent city and a refresher on its history, as well as a most relaxing cruise. Unlike some of the commercial tour operators, these docents are all volunteers with the Chicago Architecture Society who are impassioned about the city, its history and architecture. We had the absolute best time taking the 90 minute Chicago Architecture River Cruise. Our guide, Bill was very knowledgeable and had my attention the entire tour. Bill spoke about the history and the architectural heritage of the buildings. He was excellent and was very informative. When in Chicago, this tour should be first on your list of things to do. Other than our docent Rene, my favorite part of Chicago Architecture Center’s walking tour a walk through time is that we were able to see prime examples from many periods in Chicago’s architectural history in chronological order. It was a hot day and our tour guide was careful to park us in the shade while he painted vivid vignettes of the environmental, technological, political drivers of the period, meanwhile linking each period to the city’s history. I’d give this well-paced tour a grade A. Rene was super cute and I felt comfortable asking him stupid questions! Christopher K

We couldn’t have asked for a prettier day and ended up on the 5 pm boat with Monica as our guide. She was, in a word, fabulous. Her encyclopedic knowledge of the skyscrapers defined by style, the architects or groups, and the history of the river was fascinating. We sat on the top deck where the views are unobstructed and enjoyed every moment. Monica’s love for her city was palpable, and as we all know, enthusiasm is contagious. We felt fortunate to have her. I absolutely loved this tour. The info was so interesting yet totally digestible. I learned so much worthwhile info that I can’t wait to share with others. The tour guide, Steve, was exceptional. Great energy, read the group well, managed all our questions, and knew his stuff in depth. You can tell he takes a lot of pride in the quality of the tour he’s providing. I would’ve never stepped inside the Chicago motor works building, if not for this tour, and I would’ve missed something special, but it really requires the context provided on the tour, and it’s a funny story. As a Chicagoan, I was a bit ashamed at how little I knew, but I left the tour feeling like it was time well spent. We ran over, but Steve was more than happy to spend extra time with us making sure we had the most complete thorough experience. And now I don’t dislike the St. Regis architecture anymore, now that I also have that context. I highly recommend. Robin L Culver City, CA

Devil in the White City, July 2024

We went on the Devil in the White City tour, a 4 hour bus tour that visits sites from the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Started with a talk and slide show, then a stop at Prairie Avenue, into Washington Park, past the site of the Midway where Ferris’s wheel stood (now on the University of Chicago campus), into Jackson Park, past the Science and Industry Museum which was the Palace of Fine Arts during the fair, to the Wooded Island where many elements of the Japanese Garden still exist, and past a replica of the Statue of the Republic, which stood at the Center of the Lagoon in 1893. Our tour guide Liz helped us to visualize the incredible spectacle of the enormous Beaux Arts buildings, the bustle of the fair-goers, and the exotic pleasures of the Midway. If you’re a fan of Eric Larsen’s book about the fair (Devil in the White City) I highly recommend this tour. Leigh W
