President’s Message, August 2019 – Briefs and Reminders

There are really just a few news briefs and reminders for this month, when much of CAC’s docent corps seems to be taking advantage of timing before back-to-school-and-work reassert themselves.

  • Our new VP of Education, Nicole Kowrach, joined CAC as Vice President of Education and Audience Engagement on July 29. Nicole will be responsible for strategizing, resourcing, overseeing implementation, and evaluating the continued growth of the CAC’s ambitious youth and teacher education initiatives, community outreach, and tour and volunteer training programs. You are sure to meet her one of these days.
  • For those of you who think you’ve noticed some new faces or missed some old faces, The Bridge is going to post an organizational list of those staff members – chiefly in the Tour Department – we work with most closely, and their job responsibilities
  • CAC will be refreshing the Current Projects in the Chicago Gallery in the fall. We are working on expanding the Housing/Neighborhood section to include affordable housing and some interactive activities. In the Usher-Lambe Rotating Gallery, the From Me to We exhibit will be updated to focus on the subject of Future Mobility this fall and then Energy in spring 2020. The CTBUH Skyscraper Awards wall will also be updated this fall to reflect the 2019 winners. We recently had a workshop with our exhibition developers from Gallagher to discuss improving the orientation area of the CAC to make it more welcoming and engaging.
  • Almost 10,000 people visited the Center in July!
  • Please note the SAVE THE DATE entries for “Docent Day” and DAN.
  • We need to say good bye to Claudia Winkler and Liz Walls as co-chairs of the Docent Enrichment Committee, and thank both of them for many years of meticulous service. For those of you who are devoted to the annual docent trip, the great news is that Gloria Hinrichs has taken over as one of the co-chairs and will be mentored by Liz as the 2020 trip takes shape. Gloria has experience wrangling upwards of 2000 participants in national meetings, so we are in good hands.

Enjoy the waning days of summer and get ready to welcome what I have always felt is Chicago’s most beautiful and appealing season, autumn.
